St George’s Day Shakespeare Shout — Join the Mayor in Castle Gardens
The Mayor of Ludlow, Councillor Di Lyle, invites residents and visitors to join a lively, inclusive celebration of St George’s Day on Thursday 23 April. For the first time in Ludlow, the Mayor will lead a Shakespeare Shout, a moment of community voice and theatre‑inspired fun. Meet at 1pm in Castle Gardens to take part.
Event Details
What: St George’s Day Shakespeare Shout led by the Mayor of Ludlow
When: 1pm, Thursday 23 April
Where: Castle Gardens, Ludlow
Bring: Friends, family, and your voice — some attendees will have printed cards with the final line in bold (to shout); if you don’t, the words are available at stgeorgesholiday.com.
All are welcome to join this short, spirited event. The St George’s flag will be flying at the Buttercross as part of the day’s celebrations.
The Shakespeare Shout pairs two English icons — St George and William Shakespeare — and invites the whole community to join in a single, theatrical call. The Mayor will read three lines from Shakespeare’s Henry V and invite everyone to shout the final line together:
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips, straining upon the start. The game’s afoot: Follow your spirit, and upon this charge Cry “God for Harry, England, and Saint George!”
This is a national initiative and there are awards for the best shouts, so the Mayor encourages Ludlow to make itself heard.
Ludlow’s Shakespeare Shout is designed to be welcoming, family friendly and accessible. Everyone is encouraged to take part.
Before the shout, the Mayor will reflect on the shared date of 23 April — the day associated with both St George and Shakespeare — and on St George’s long history in England as a symbol of welcome and integration, a reminder of the positive story of belonging and contribution that resonates across our town today.
Join Ludlow's first 'Shakespeare Shout' on Thursday 23 April to celebrate community, heritage, and a bit of Shakespearean theatre. Bring your voice, bring your neighbours, and help Ludlow make a joyful, inclusive noise for St George.
