Ludlow Town Council Holds Mayor Making Ceremony for 2025/26

Ludlow Town Council hosted its annual Mayor Making Ceremony at the Ludlow Assembly Rooms on Wednesday 28th May at 7:00pm. The formal civic event saw the election of Councillor Diane Lyle as Mayor of Ludlow for 2025/26, with Councillor Kathy Cowell elected as Deputy Mayor.

The ceremony was attended by a wide cross-section of the local civic and community life, including Town Councillors, visiting Mayors and dignitaries, the Town Clerk, the Sergeant at Arms, Mace Bearer, Ludlow Town Crier, the Archdeacon of Ludlow — The Venerable Dr. Fiona Gibson — Town Council staff, and local town residents.

The evening commenced with a ceremonial procession, proudly announced by Ludlow’s recently appointed Town Crier. A warm welcome was offered by incoming Mayor Cllr Diane Lyle, followed by prayers led by Archdeacon Dr. Fiona Gibson. Cllr Lyle then made her formal declaration of acceptance of office and delivered her inaugural address as Mayor.

In her speech, Mayor Lyle expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve, calling the role “a huge privilege” and committing herself to representing Ludlow with pride, humility, and resilience. She paid tribute to the leadership of outgoing Mayor Cllr Beverley Waite.   Cllr Lyle announced her chosen charity for the mayoral year: Working Together Ludlow. Nigel Bishop, Chief Officer of the charity, addressed the audience to share the charity’s vital work supporting people with learning difficulties and learning disabilities in the local area.

The evening also included the Deputy Mayor's formal declaration of acceptance, along with the official appointments of the Mayor’s Chaplain, the Sergeant at Arms, the Mace Bearer and the Town Crier.

One of the evening’s highlights was the presentation of Ludlow’s Civic Awards, honouring individuals whose extraordinary contributions have enriched the town:

Anita Bigsby – For founding the Ludlow Fringe Festival and bringing a vibrant cultural programme to the town, boosting local arts and tourism.
Erica Garner – For her tireless community work, including leading ‘Ludlow Supports Refugees’ and establishing the Ludlow and Area Community Partnership.
Lesley Beioley – For her long-standing dedication to maintaining Lower Galdeford, showcasing the best of Ludlow through community pride and care.
Former Cllr Rose Jones – For 18 years of distinguished service as Town Councillor, including three terms as Mayor and three as Deputy Mayor.

The evening concluded in celebration of community, commitment, and civic pride — hallmarks of Ludlow’s continuing dedication to public service and engagement.
