Ludlow Museum at the Buttercross is proud to present a new exhibition exploring the remarkable history of Ludlow’s Town Hall — a building that once stood at the heart of civic life, community celebration and local identity.

Beginning with the Medieval Town Hall of 1704 and moving through to the Victorian building designed in 1886 by architect Henry Cheers to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, the exhibition traces the evolution of one of Ludlow’s most important public buildings. In its later years, the grand ballroom — complete with its renowned sprung dance floor — hosted glittering dances, film screenings, sporting events, celebrity appearances and countless community gatherings. During World War II, the Town Hall became a vital centre for wartime support, from gas mask distribution and first aid provision to dances that offered much‑needed relief from the pressures of conflict.

The exhibition brings together original artefacts, a time capsule, historic photographs, architectural details and personal stories — including images of the iconic plaster horse head created as a tribute to Ludlow‑born artist Adrian Jones, saved from demolition and now displayed at Ludlow College.

The exhibition is now open at Ludlow Museum at the Buttercross during normal museum hours.
