Ludlow Town Council Celebrates Local Heroes During Volunteers’ Week

As Volunteers’ Week draws to a close, Ludlow Town Council extends heartfelt thanks to the many individuals whose tireless contributions help to keep our town thriving, welcoming, and beautiful. This national celebration of volunteering, held annually from 1st–7th June, offers the perfect moment to recognise and appreciate the selfless service of our local volunteers who make such a big difference in our community.

Across Ludlow, volunteers give their time, energy, and care to projects that enrich civic life, protect our natural and historic heritage, and help build a more connected and compassionate community. These efforts may often go unsung, but their impact is deeply felt and widely appreciated.

Among those we’d like to celebrate is Graeme Perks, whose dedication to the care and upkeep of our town benches ensures that residents and visitors alike can pause and enjoy Ludlow’s charming streets and green spaces in comfort. His quiet work helps preserve the character of our town for all to enjoy.

Our thanks also go to the Guerrilla Gardeners, whose work in Castle Gardens breathes new life into our shared spaces. With tools in hand and hearts full of pride, these green-fingered volunteers tend to shrub beds and borders, helping to keep our town blooming and beautiful.

The Ludlow Pride of Place team deserve special recognition for their ongoing litter-picking efforts. Their commitment to keeping Ludlow clean and tidy not only enhances the environment but also fosters a sense of civic pride in us all.

Volunteers at the Ludlow Museum at the Buttercross share their passion for local history, welcoming visitors and helping preserve Ludlow’s rich heritage for future generations. Their dedication ensures that the stories of our town remain accessible and engaging.

Meanwhile, the vibrant Ludlow Flower Box Action Group adds splashes of colour throughout the town. Whether planting seasonal blooms or giving planters a fresh coat of paint, their creativity and care make Ludlow more cheerful and inviting year-round.

We also thank the Henley Road Helpers, whose work in the cemetery and gardens helps to preserve Ludlow’s natural heritage with sensitivity and respect. Their efforts keep these important spaces maintained and peaceful for all who visit.

During Ludlow’s Mayor Making Ceremony held at the end of May, four outstanding individuals were formally recognised for their significant contributions to civic life with Civic Awards:

  • Anita Bigsby, for founding the Ludlow Fringe Festival, enriching our cultural calendar and supporting local arts, tourism, and business.
  • Erica Garner, for her tireless work leading Ludlow Supports Refugees and establishing the Ludlow and Area Community Partnership, helping those in need access vital services and community support.
  • Lesley Beioley, for her longstanding commitment to maintaining Lower Galdeford, keeping the area clean, cared for, and welcoming through her daily acts of kindness and pride.
  • Former Councillor Rose Jones, recognised for an impressive 18 years of service to the town, including three terms as Mayor and three as Deputy Mayor, with a legacy of dedication and leadership.

As we mark the end of Volunteers’ Week, we celebrate these quiet heroes whose actions speak volumes. Thank you to all our volunteers – your time, passion and commitment are what makes Ludlow not just a town, but a truly special community.
