Ludlow Town Council and St Laurence’s PCC have agreed on preliminary steps

Ludlow Town Council and St Laurence’s PCC have agreed on preliminary steps, which they will take together, with a view to enabling the restoration of the Town Wall at St Laurence’s churchyard.

The Town Council and the PCC will be working in partnership with the Ludlow Town Walls Trust.

These preliminary steps will include instructing a firm of structural engineers to prepare a specification of works, in order to invite quotations from contractors and commence the process of obtaining necessary permissions and approaching grant-making bodies who may assist with meeting the costs of the work.

It is too soon to make public any estimate of costs but that information will be shared as soon as practicable after quotations have been received.

The PCC will proceed with seeking the necessary civic planning permissions and diocesan faculties (part of the Church of England’s planning permission system) for the removal of trees in the churchyard adjacent to the wall. The technical advice is that these are a potential threat to the integrity of the present and proposed wall structures. Alternative planting of flowering trees at a safe distance from the wall is envisaged.

The Council, the PCC and the Ludlow Town Walls Trust all recognise the importance of actions such as these for the community and economy of Ludlow. The intention is to help to secure the heritage, and further to enhance the reputation, of our historic town.
