Free Entry on Sundays at Ludlow Museum at the Buttercross

Local residents and visitors are encouraged to visit Ludlow Museum at the Buttercross for free on Sundays!  Following a decision made by Services Committee, Ludlow Town Council will introduce a new ‘Free Entry Sundays’ initiative from Sunday 1st November. The six‑month trial will run throughout the winter and into next spring.

This summer’s extended opening during Ludlow’s History Festival — with free entry kindly provided by Ludlow Civic Society and Ludlow Town Guides — brought a significant uplift in visitors and very positive feedback from residents and tourists alike.

The new trial aims to build on this momentum by offering residents and visitors a regular opportunity to explore Ludlow’s heritage at no cost, encouraging repeat visits and supporting the Museum during quieter seasonal periods.

2026 marks the Museum’s 10th anniversary, a milestone celebrated with free‑entry days, a special evening reception, and a strong summer of activity. During the reception, the Mayor of Ludlow, Councillor Diane Lyle, reflected on the Museum’s role in the town’s cultural life, saying:

“In the historic Buttercross, we are reminded of just how deeply Ludlow’s heritage is woven into the identity of our town.”

The Mayor also highlighted the Museum’s long‑term impact, noting that since opening, it has welcomed over 50,000 visitors, from school groups discovering Ludlow’s past for the first time to residents reconnecting with familiar stories.

The Museum’s Arts Council Accreditation was praised as “a nationally recognised mark of a professionally managed, sustainable and trusted museum.”

The Buttercross was recognised with a heritage award in 2017, celebrating the Town Council’s work to preserve and enhance the Conservation Area — a reminder of the building’s civic importance and the Museum’s role in keeping it alive.

The Museum continues to play a central role in sharing Ludlow’s story — from archaeology and medieval development to civic history and local traditions — and the introduction of Free Entry Sundays reflects the Council’s commitment to keeping that heritage accessible to all.

Ludlow Museum at the Buttercross is operated by Ludlow Town Council and located in the historic Buttercross building at the top of Broad Street. The Museum’s collections highlight Ludlow’s history, seasonal temporary exhibitions, civic development and local stories.
